Chevrolet is betting on off-road performance to boost interest in the Silverado EV, which still sells much less than its combustion version.

To achieve this, they developed the Silverado EV ZR2, an electric race pickup with three motors and 1100 hp, which will compete in the Mint 400, one of the most challenging off-road races in the USA.

The model features improvements such as 37-inch BFGoodrich tires, reinforced suspension, and Multimatic shock absorbers, as well as locking differentials and underbody protection plates. Its powertrain is similar to the Hummer EV, and GM claims it delivers 15,600 Nm of torque at the wheels, although the actual value measured conventionally is lower.

In addition to the competition, Chevrolet is also preparing the arrival of the Silverado EV Trail Boss, a trail-oriented version set to launch later this year. This variant, which first appeared in 2022, took time to enter production but is finally on its way. The Trail Boss will come with a raised suspension, 18-inch wheels, 35-inch all-terrain tires, red tow hooks, and a specific mode for rugged terrain, providing enhanced off-road capabilities.

The Silverado EV ZR2’s participation in the Mint 400 will serve as a laboratory for Chevrolet to test components and refine technologies that may be applied to its production models. The brand states that the experience gained from the competition will help refine both the Trail Boss and future high-performance accessories for its electric vehicles.

More details about the new version of the Silverado EV will be released soon.
